Welcome
Welcome to the website for the
Native American Wellness Scale (NAWS)! Thank you very much for
your interest. Your involvement and participation is the only
way that we can continue to develop a culturally appropriate
conceptualization of Native wellness that includes an awareness
of the effects of colonization on the quality of life of
indigenous peoples.
Purpose of the Study
The present
study intends to report the development and validation of a
scale to measure overall wellness in Native American and
indigenous populations, called the Native American Wellness
Scale (NAWS). The NAWS is a self-report measure designed to
enable investigators to obtain easily sensitive measures of the
degree of wellness experienced by individuals in six domains:
(a) psychological well-being, (b) emotional well-being, (c)
spiritual well-being, (d) physical well-being, and (e) historical trauma symptoms. The purpose of
the study is to fill a void with respect to standardized quality
of life and wellness measures appropriate for use with Native
American populations.
Who's Eligible
Native Americans and indigenous
people from all nations and tribal affiliations are invited to
participate. Tribal enrollment is not a necessary prerequisite
to participate. Men and women ages 18 to 75 are eligible to
participate.
Thank you so very much! If you
have questions about your eligibility, contact the Principal
Investigator, Denise Alvarado at
nativewellness@gmail.com.
How to Participate
Participant recruitment will
begin within six to eight weeks. Interested parties are
encouraged to use the
sign-up form to the left so that you can be notified of the
progress of the study. There will be both an online and
paper-and-pencil version of the NAWS. If you would like to
participate, please do not hesitate to contact the principle
investigator, Denise Alvarado
at
nativewellness@gmail.com.

Native Wellness
is...
living a
good way of life, and maintaining balance through harmonious
relationships with family, clan, community, self, the natural
world, and all living beings. The four directions of wellness
are spiritual wellbeing, emotional wellbeing, physical
wellbeing, and mental wellbeing. Wellness exists when there is a
balance among these four directions.
